I have noticed many appraisers against the UMPCs, but I love mine. I
use an OQO (www.OQO.com) every day in the field. I have been wanting to
change out for one of the Sony UX series so that I do not have to carry
a camera any more. But the downside compared to my tablet: The screen
is very small (same problem I had with Pocket PC apps) so I find myself
using the keyboard more than the touch screen (which can cause sore
thumbs at the end of the day). Precisely why I wanted it is also it's
flaw...it is tiny.
But for weight, ease of use and battery life (I have the extended one),
if your eyes are good enough, these small systems are great. But each
person has their own tastes. I was tired of having to wear a bat
utility belt to carry all my electronics and still hauling around a
tablet on top of that. I carry the smallest camera I can as well.
If you get one, make sure you get as good of a screen as you can and as
much processor/memory as well. My old OQO made me go back to my trusty
tablet, but the improvements many of them have made were because they
saw us all run back to our tablets. With the built in bluetooth you can
have all kinds of external toys...mouse, keyboard, GPS. I have all of
these in my car with a mount
(http://www.buildyourumpc.com/ ) andOQO-car-mount- p/oqo01-carmount .htm
ended up giving my TomTom to my wife. The thing is with all these toys
we love so much, you give up things to get things...you just have to
find what is important to you. And hopefully it wont take a cabinet
full of unused new toys to find your favorite. :))
